Now that you've spent quite some time and effort creating an aesthetic webpage, it's time to build your home in cyberspace. To allow everyone with an Internet connection to access and view your pages, you need to put them on a web server. A web server is a computer that is permanently connected to the Net displaying your page when people try to reach your URL. URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator, or your Internet address and is usually of the format http://www.servername.com/yourname

While owning your own server is a costly proposition, there are Internet services that allow you to put up your homepage for a price, while there are a few that offer their services for free. These free webspace providers can afford to give away free space by earning advertising revenue based on their user profile. To that end, they require you to fill in a few details about yourself, and stick to certain rules that they have - like not using the site for commercial purposes, and not putting up vulgar material on your home page.

You can choose your username and password to maintain your homepage on the Net. All these services offer you a fixed amount of space on their computers which you can use to put up your homepage, pictures, sound files and what have you. Most of the services offer you a minimum of 10 Mb - with one megabyte storing an average of 75 pages - that is a lot of space for free! Most of these have homepage builders that allow you to build your page without any knowledge of HTML, while some allow you FTP upload (upload all your files from your machine at one stroke) while the rest offer HTTP upload (5 files at a stretch).
