Let's start off this month's column with good news: MTNL will be entering the ISP market a few days from now. Even better is the news that their rates will be 15% less than what VSNL is currently charging. Let the price wars begin, and may the customer benefit!

Five days into February can only mean one thing - Valentine's Day is just over a week away. And if you're not like Harry Solomon - that close eyed character from Third Rock from the Sun - you would have noticed the red hearts and pink ribbons all around the place. This is typically the time when you realise that you fit into one of three categories: unexperienced-single-and-willing-to-mingle, unmarried-or-married-but-hitched, or a down-and-out-loser. Don't worry - either ways there's something for you on the Net.

The unexperienced-single-and-willing-to-mingle person:
Usually a first timer, mostly a teenager who's tired of being a spectator and has decided to take the plunge this Valentine's. There's someone you've got a crush on, but don't know how to express the feeling, or when to do so. There's no time like now - and the best part is that you don't have to worry about being rejected in front of anybody - not even the object of your affection for that matter! Log onto SecretAdmirer- your electronic cupid. You can send a message to that someone you couldn't muster the courage to say those words to. The message is anonymous: the person who receives it doesn't know who sent it. The recipient in turn will have to guess who sent it and send a message (or messages if they're guessing) to the person they think sent it - if they're interested. SecretAdmirer will wake up when the person replies to you and you both get a match message, revealing your identities to each other, and informing you both that your feelings are mutual. Isn't that easy, safe and tension free? If you need some fundaes to be cleared before you take this step, Cupid's Articles for Singles is a site you can turn to for guidance.

The unmarried-or-married-but-hitched person:
So you've already got a significant other - good for you! You don't have to go through those stages to find a valentine. If you're still not sure whether your SO is the right person for you, spend a few moments at StarMatcher to find out just how compatible you two are. And if you need an even more basic question answered - "Is it true love? Or just infatuation?" there are some guidelines to help you evaluate in the alt.romance FAQ . Once you've made up your mind, remember if you don't water a plant, it'll die - and if you don't nurture your love, you'll be joining the ranks in the category that follows. So wake up, send your lover a mushy Valentine's message and an ecard, send them some flowers and a gift, show them you care. Get some ideas to spice up your V-Day. And do it all online!

Down-and-out-loser:
Aha! The category I'm most familiar with. You've tried, and tried, and you've failed each time. V-Day is something that plunges a dagger into your heart each time you think of it. You've loved and lost… and contrary to age-old wisdom, you know that's not better that not having loved at all! If you find yourself strong enough to try yet again, follow the links online for category one. If not, go to the Cyrano server, create a Valentine's letter, see the results, and laugh your blues away. If you think your relationship sucks and want to get away from it all, Cyrano will help you there too! And if you're filled with hate for your ex or the world at large, go to Virtual Plague where you can send a disease virtually anywhere - to anyone - and for free! And if there's any hatred left inside of you after doing all of the above, spend some time following the Anti-Valentine's Day links from last year's column. That should empty the cesspool inside of you and get you ready to laugh at the poor suckers who actually celebrate Valentine's Day!

And don't wait for the last minute…because as the saying goes - "The early bird gets the worm … or the date… or whatever!"
