What the Net says about you

Just as the start of each new year is a good time to look back at the year gone by and plan for the upcoming year, birthdays are a good time to sit back and learn more about yourself. While the more serious would choose the introspection route, others could take the easy way out, and use the Internet to browse through birthday horoscopes and discover what different schools of thought say about them, based on their birth date.

Curious about what being born on the 9th of October meant, I pointed my mouse at Birthday Interpretations (http://www.spiritlink.com/bdintro.html). According to this site, the day of the month on which the you were born - regardless of which month or year - is a key numerological indicator, providing an excellent "thumbnail sketch" of standout traits. Some of the traits of all of us born on the 9th are: "… broadminded, philanthropic, literary, artistic and strong willed, natural rulers who can succeed in almost anything artistic, as well as writing, teaching, law, publishing or the ministry"

Not only does the site tell you about personality traits, but also solves the age old dilemma - the site offers gifting suggestions that are based on the traits associated with the day of birth for a personalised and appropriate gift. The site says that the best gifts for me are : "clock, juicer, skates, computer, rocker, towel set, humidifier, heater, and electronic gadgets". While another computer and electronic gadgets suffice for me, why don't you check how true their gifting ideas hold for your own birthday? Log in to http://www.spiritlink.com/lighter.html

If that's not enough for you, try the Aztec Astrologer (http://www.maths.uq.edu.au/~mrb/Aztec/). The owner of the webpage, was so fascinated by "Aztec Astrology" - a book on Aztec astrology that he chanced upon in a second-hand store that he developed a program to give web surfers their daily or natal horoscopes.

To unearth your Aztec horoscope for a particular day, you have to enter that date and hey presto! In a manner of seconds, believers can see what's in store, while sceptics can smile it away. What's today's horoscope? "A generally unlucky day, but one on which you can help yourself by taking a situation firmly in hand, as with the Jewelled Turkey, so that a seemingly unpleasant situation might develop into a profitable one." Like most other horoscopes, this one too is sketchy and neither here nor there!

The Natal Horoscope is a more interesting concept - after entering your date of birth, and time of birth, you're presented with a few Aztec beliefs. Those born today have the sign of Tochtli (the head of a rabbit), connotating fertility. People born today are fond of gaiety, parties and especially fond of drink. Sorry, gotta give this one the thumbs down…

Our last and final stop today is the ChartMaster, at Astrology.Net (http://Astrology.Net). Instead of going by sun-signs or by numbers, the ChartMaster looks at your astrological "thumb-print" - a snapshot of the solar system recorded when you were born. There's a free trial option that requires you to fill in your details including your date, time and place of birth. That done, in a couple of minutes the site offers you your free horoscope and chart wheel. The horoscope is detailed and split into four sections: approach to life, inner you, mental interests and abilities, and finally your emotions. The chart wheel is a complicated looking colourful chart with all sorts of lines and signs crowding the image. Would best serve as a decorative wall hanging to intrigue friends and visitors…

So much for discovering more about yourself on the Internet. Now log out and come back to reality!
