Mailing lists and weddings...

Net Gains now has its own moderated, free mailing list. E-mail will be sent to those who subscribe, once a week (tentatively on Sundays). This mailing list will cater to VSNL related tips and issues, readers questions (which other readers can help answer too!), interesting URLs, software (freeware and shareware), and news ( your contributions are welcome). Homepages of subscribers will also be showcased.

For those who are not clear about how this mailing list works, here goes : A mailing list is a list of people who voluntarily sign up to receive regular e-mails about a certain topic (In our case, it will be Internet related). If the list is a moderated list (like this one is), mail can be sent out to the subscribers only by the list administrator (me). In a moderated list, all emails sent to the list are screened by the moderator or list owner. When a member sends email to the list, the email is read, appropriate emails selected, and compiled into a neat, compact e-mail which is sent out to the subscribers. Since no one can send e-mail to the rest of the mailing list directly, your email addresses are protected, and you don't have to worry about junk mail.

You can sign up for the free newsletter at the Net Gains home page - http://www.strategist.net. Once you sign up, you can send in your contributions and questions to [email protected].

Two months ago, a 20 year old engineering student - Sagar Hawaldar - started a Bulletin Board Service (BBS) called The Cyber Cruiser. A BBS is a service provided for free or for a fee, depending on the operator. It basically consists of a computer you can connect to (similar to dialing up VSNL), and exchange material with - software, messages, games, graphics etc. The advantage here is that you are assured of plenty of good quality stuff - unlike the Net where you can spend hours searching for a decent piece of software.

The Cyber Cruiser offers free downloads - and there's over 400 Mb of great programs there ! Besides, Sagar ([email protected] ) has introduced the concept of Online CD-ROMS, for the first time in Mumbai - for a fee. You could connect to the Cyber Cruiser and choose and use the CD-ROMS from the comfort of your own home. The only downside to the Cyber Cruiser is that there is only dial up number - 4223196. Which means as the service gets more popular, you'll find it more difficult to login to the system. Unless of course, he gets sponsors and a few more lines …

And finally, to what quite a few of you have been waiting for - sites on the Web where you can see and post matrimonial classifieds. There seems quite a bit of interest in exploring online matrimonials - could it be because of the lure of having more NRIs / green card holders listed there ? In the last 2 months, I've been e-mailed 12 requests for matrimonial sites from young ladies and their mothers. Now most of these sites listed below have search engines to help you narrow your search. You can specify what kind of a person you are looking for - by selecting the religion, profession and even caste. However, none of the sites had any option of choosing a prospective hubby going by the amount of dowry that would be transacted. Onto your quest now …

Matrimonial on Net Express (http://www.expressindia.com/net_express/matrimonial.html)

Religious and Singles (http://discoverynetwork.com/religionlove.htm) - links to Indian, Jewish, Israeli, and Christian matrimonial sites.

Jeevan Sathi (http://www.erols.com/a1action/jeevan.htm) - free and paid services

International Indian Marriage Centers (http://www.marriage.com/india.html) - another big listing for Indian matrimonial sites : Punjabis, Gujarathis, Christians, South Indians …

Saakshi (http://www.saakshi.com/) - an interactive service for a fee where the service providers match your profile with their other subscribers and give you matches daily. Secrecy is maintained till it finally clicks from both sides - somewhat like the traditional matchmaker who keeps making discreet inquiries from both sides till they agree to meet !

All India Yellow Pages (http://www.gadnet.com/wedseek.htm) - covered 3 weeks ago - great search interface !

Imatch (http://www.imatch.com) - a very different approach to getting a partner. Use voice profiles to find suitable better - halves. And at a later stage, connect and chat too ! (Shell account would be useless for this one)

And when things do click, you know the e-mail address you could send your wedding invitation to … Chal then, till next week.
