The art of online research

Primary research:

  • Questionnaire is prepared, keeping in mind the unwritten rules of the Internet-quick and easy, short and simple, and easy-clickable.

  • The survey is `programmed' as a web page and put on the Internet.

  • The Internet address is publicised for making people aware of it.

  • Respondents who are usually attracted by the lure of gifts and freebies, access it via browsers.

  • Respondents complete the survey and hit a ``Submit'' button.

  • Data is automatically posted to a data file for further processing.

    Secondary research:

  • Start by looking up a Web directory like Yahoo!, navigating your way through a hierarchy in search of websites of renowned research companies and institutes. Most of these sites will have their research reports archived

  • Use a search engine to look for relevant published research results. Until you master the art of finding exactly what you want using a search engine, you'll have a lot of fine-tuning to do before you find what exactly you're looking for

  • While using data from any published results online, check the authencity of the site. There are times when reports from different companies will drastically differ in their findings. Compiling and collating these results take experience and patience.
